Deep Thinker is now taking guitar lessons. His teacher is named Phil. I could tell on day one that these two were going to study well together. Phil is really polite, serious, and diligent about where the last lesson left off and where the new one begins. Very patient guy and excellent guitar player (of course).

So, after lessons today, I asked, “Hey, do you still feel like you and Phil are studying well together?”

Deep Thinker responded, “Oh, yeah. We make a good team. Phil is a quiet and serious man, and I am a quiet and serious man. It works perfect.”

On a side note, shortly after this, another God question. (Mind you, it has been at least 7 months since we’ve been to church. I don’t really talk about God at home with them, but I should try. We say the blessing at dinner time, and that’s pretty much it. Deep Thinker is just a big God lover of his own making.) SO, he asked, “Hey Mom, do you think God plans out our whole life when we’re a baby in our mom’s belly? Or does he just plan it day by day?”

He’s a little deep for age 6. Hence his blog nick name Deep Thinker.

So, I explained, “Honey, we can’t take things home from preschool. This money belongs to the school. Why did you take it?”

He looked at me like this was the most ludicrous thing he’s ever heard. Then he responded, “I took it because the teacher wasn’t LOOKING when I put the money in my POCKETS.”

Then he threw his hands up in the air in frustration at my stupidity.

Rowdy Rebel is really good for his naps now. (Sure, now that he’s almost too old for them.) He just lays down and stays in bed until he goes to sleep. But for some reason last Saturday, he reverted back to the terrible two’s when he screamed non-stop at the top of his lungs for a very long time before falling asleep.

Other than that, he was really good on Saturday. Played nicely, no fighting (well, not really dangerous fighting), no scary stunts, just really calm and sweet.

So, in the evening, we were telling hid daddy how good Rowdy Rebel had acted all day. I said, “He was sooo good today. Oh, except at naptime. Then he was screaming really loudly…”

Rowdy Rebel looked at his daddy and explained, “Oh yeah. That was a assident.”

Today, my first grader (oldest child) told me that during PE, he and his friends were playing “chop chop.” This is a game when the kids give each other karate chops. My son explained that one of the playground supervisors told him to stop doing it, or he would have to walk laps around the playground rather than play.

A few hours later after lunch, they started playing again. My son explained, “I looked for that playground supervisor, and she wasn’t there. So, I played chop chop. If another teacher didn’t like it, I knew she would just give me a warning. If one of them warned me, I would stop. But no one did, so I played chop chop.” Of course his eyes were opened widely as he explained this.

This was soooo “him.” Rules are so important to him.

I think all kids love copying phrases they hear adults say. My older son is no exception. He tries really hard and loves it when his friends laugh or think he sounds cool.

Yesterday I was asking about his new school. He’s been going a week and a half, but I guess I’ll ask these questions as long as he keeps answering–”Who did you talk to? Who did you sit with? Who did you play with? Did you tell any funny jokes?”

At first he likes talking about school, but then he starts getting bored and sends obvious signals. So when I asked if he liked the stuff they did in class, he said “I forgot.” This is a pretty clear sign that he’s ready to stop talking about school and do something funner.

I thought I’d try once more, just to get a little more info on how his day went. So I said, “Well, try really hard to remember. Did you like the stuff you did today? Did you understand everything?”

He said, “Mom, I got three words for ya: I forgot.”

I asked him what it is about her that made him fall in love. He said, “She’s really pretty because she has lots of sweat in her hair. I like girls who have sweat.” After a few questions, I confirmed that by “sweat,” he did indeed mean perspiration. (I have seen her, and she’s cute, somewhat of a tomboy).

When I asked how long he had loved her, he said since about October. When I asked if Abby loves him, my son said he doesn’t know:)

Me: What is your favorite food, chicken or spaghetti?

In a prior post I described how my five year old waited the entire play period to get a turn on the swing, just to give it up when his friend asked to have a turn. I encouraged him to take his turn first (at least sometimes!).

Well, the very next day, the same “friend” asked for my son’s turn. And as we discussed, my son said, “No, I want to take my turn this time.” As it turns out, that “friend” often asked for my son’s turn on the swing. And when he finally refused to give up his turn on the swing, the boy used the old “I won’t be your friend anymore line.” Well, my little Deep Thinker was not fooled. He refused anyway. And has continued to refuse up to today. He still gives friends his turn, but only when he knows they “really need a turn.”

On the way home today, we had a little talk. Deep Thinker said this same “friend” asked if he could cut in front of him in line today. My son refused, and the “friend” tried to push ahead of him anyway. Little Deep Thinker used blocking and some interesting walking from side to side techniques, and that other guy finally went to the back of the line.

So I asked, “Doesn’t it feel good to take your turn? Aren’t you proud of yourself?”

His response: “Well, it felt good to let my friends have my turn. But it feels even better to take it myself.” What a sweetheart.
